Living with Diabetes (Type 2)

I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would get diabetes. I watched our father deal with it. Our father did not take care of himself or his diabetes. He was an alcoholic which only added problems to the disease.
Dad was always hungry, and I know how that is because I also deal with that. I told myself years ago that I did not want this awful disease. I went to a diabetes class with my mother because I had to learn to inject my father with his insulin. I had a pretty good understanding of Type II Diabetes when I was diagnosed with it.
My glucose has a tendency to drop to some terrible low numbers. I get the shakes, become very agitated, and my brain just does not work right. It's scary for sure. It has dropped to high 40's before. So I really have to watch it and make sure I eat small meals throughout the day and not skip a meal. I usually tell people when I am agitated and why. I do not want anyone to take it personal or think they did anything wrong. It's me!
Out of five siblings, my youngest brother and I are the only ones with diabetes. I was shocked when I was diagnosed with it as I had NO symptoms. I don't drink nor do I smoke which is a good thing when you have diabetes. My numbers are often all over the place (up and down). Stress is my worse enemy and it does not go well with diabetes. Infections can affect numbers. You can take good care of yourself and still have problems with numbers. I recall reading an article about the great Billie Jean King (tennis player). Billie was diagnosed with Type 2 and who would have thought? Very active - watches what she eats but she was not surprised with the diagnosis as it runs in her family.
Diabetes is no fun at all and it takes work to keep it in check.
